What is Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery?

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is both a medical and surgical discipline. Otolaryngologic specialists have training and expertise in the medical and surgical management of a variety of diseases that occur in the head and neck region. Otolaryngology is the study of the ear and voice box, but in practice, Otolaryngologists are capable of caring for most medical problems that occur above the collar bone, except for the eyes and brain. Traditionally, Otolaryngologists, also known as ENT doctors, have cared for all disorders that involve the ears, nose and throat, but within the last 35 to 40 years the specialty has grown and diversified.

Special Expertise

In addition to the medical and surgical treatment of Ear, Nose and Throat disorders in both children and adults, many Otolaryngologists have expertise and special training in: Cancer and Tumor Surgery of the Head and Neck, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Otology and Neurotology, Skull Base Surgery and Otolaryngologic Allergy. While not all Otolaryngologists have expertise in these sub-specialties, most are capable of taking care of cancer and tumors that involve the head and neck region, and a variety of facial plastic and traumatic problems. Recently, our specialty has made great strides in the areas of endoscopic sinus surgery, treatment of voice disorders, head and neck cancer, and laser surgery for treatment of nose, sinus, ear, and voice box disorders.
